Sweden’s southernmost city, Trelleborg, has received a multi-million-dollar investment that spotlights hydrogen as a growing future industry in Southern Sweden, and which could lead to 100 new jobs.

This week, American company Fiba Technologies announced it was making a long-term investment in southwest Skåne's port city, Trelleborg. Manufacturer of pressure tanks for the storage and distribution of pressurised gas, Fiba Technologies has established itself as a key supplier in alternative fuels, with expertise in the construction of filling stations for hydrogen and compressed natural gas (CNG).

Trelleborg as a strategic location

Fiba Technologies identified Trelleborg as a strategic location in the middle of Europe due to the city being home to Scandinavia's largest roll-on/roll-off port, its proximity to rail connections, foreseeing good conditions in the southernmost Sweden for developing its business. The factory that will be established in Trelleborg will specialise in the manufacture of equipment used to store and transport high-pressure hydrogen.

"We believe that Europe, and specifically Sweden, is an excellent place to participate in the growing hydrogen economy," says John Finn, Vice President of Operations at finance at Fiba Technologies.

Invest in Skåne helped facilitate the decision-making process

The American firm’s establishment in Trelleborg is the result of a collaboration between Trelleborg Municipality, Business Sweden, the property company Lomma Tegelfabrik and Invest in Skåne – the Skåne region’s official investment promotion agency.

Invest in Skåne helped Fiba Technologies with the site selection process providing them with different property opportunities and market and benchmark analysis.

"Fiba Technology's establishment in Trelleborg is an important investment for the entire region and we are happy that they chose Skåne as their base in Europe. Not least for the new jobs that will be created, but also for the company's expertise as a supplier in the alternative fuels industry and their long-term strategy to be part of the growing hydrogen market", says Jonathan Herrlin, Business Developer at Invest in Skåne.

Hydrogen a future industry

Hydrogen is considered a future industry within the energy sector with the potential to store and produce energy. This, in turn, plays an important role in the transition to renewable energy sources and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. Hydrogen is also an important part of the green transition throughout Europe and the EU is making significant investments to promote research, innovation and development in the hydrogen sector.

New job opportunities

Fiba Technologies' long-term goal for the expansion in Trelleborg is an investment of 30 million US dollars and the creation of approximately 100 jobs over a period of five to ten years.
